MHS 247 Fundic Stomach

Fundic Stomach

This specimen was stained with periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) stain to chemically convert the sugars in mucus into a magenta-colored product. It was counter-stained with hematoxylin to show additional details.

This allows the of the surface mucous cells as they extend down into gastric pits. It also makes it easy to see the mucous neck cells.

  • - surface mucous cells invaginate to form gastric pits. Their mucus is intensely stained a dark magenta.
  • - composed of three regions:
    • - small region at the apex of the gland adjacent to a gastric pit.
    • - largest part of the gland between the isthmus and the fundus.
    • (body) - base of gland adjacent to the muscularis mucosae.

Major cell types in gastric glands:

  • - PAS positive cells found in the isthmus and neck.
  • - large, oval cells with a central nucleus found mostly in the neck. They are stained light pink and are found throughout the gland.
  • - small, slightly basophilic cells found in the fundus among parietal cells.
