MH 134 Nasal Conchae and Palate

Nasal Conchae and Palate

This specimen is a sagittal section through the lower part of the nasal cavity and palate. The nasal cavity is at the top while the mouth is at the bottom. The tissue section has been distorted and partially broken apart during preparation.

  • (top) - warms, moistens and cleans air prior to its entry into the lungs.
    • - pseudostratified epithelium with cilia and goblet cells lines the nasal cavity.
    • - long, narrow and curled bone that protrudes into the nasal cavity.
    • Nasal Sero-Mucous Glands (,)
    • - nasal portion of the pharynx.
  • - roof of the mouth that separates the oral cavity from the nasal cavity.
    • - anterior, bony (rigid) portion.
    • - posterior, fleshy (soft) portion.
      • - closes the nasal passages during swallowing and sneezing.
      • Palatine Mucous Glands (,)
  • (bottom) - opening of the mouth through which food is taken in and vocalizations emerge.
