EM 357 Lacteals

Lacteals

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of villi in the duodenum after removal of the lamina propria. This micrograph looks down on villi whose apical tips have been broken off revealing their interior.

Lacteals are blunt-ended lymphatic capillaries located at the center of villi in the small intestine. As seen here, lymphatic capillaries may reach 100 µm in diameter.

  • Enterocytes (blue) – simple columnar epithelium with goblet cells
  • Basal Lamina (purple) – remnants remain attached to base of the epithelium
  • Lacteals (yellow) –lymphatic capillaries that absorb digested fats and fat-soluble substances
    • Simple squamous epithelium
