EM 337 Myenteric Ganglion

Myenteric Ganglion

Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a small region of a nerve and adjacent glial cells in the myenteric plexus (Auerbach's plexus). Nerve cell bodies are surrounded by satellite cells.

  • (green) - part of the nerve cell body
  • (tan) - surround the cell body of neurons
    • - aggregates of intermediate filaments are seen in cross-section
  • (orange)
    • Synaptic Vessels (purple) - several of the larger nerve fibers contain synaptic vessels
    • Microtubules - cross-sections seen in many fibers

Subcellular Structures

  • Nucleus (blue) / Nuclear Envelope (purple)
  • Golgi Apparatus (yellow)
  • Mitochondria (red)
  • Endoplasmic Reticulum (cyan)
  • (intermediate junctions; purple)

Originally classified as Schwann cells, satellite cells are now considered a separate type of peripheral glial cell because the express proteins only found in astrocytes of the central nervous system. They have been named enteric glial cells.
