EM 213 Peripheral Nerve

Peripheral Nerve

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of a peripheral nerve in smooth muscle.

  • (green) - glial cells that cover axons in peripheral nerve fibers
    • Completely (or partially) ensheath multiple unmyelinated axons in cytoplasmic invaginations
    • (purple) - surrounds the nerve fiber
      • Isolates all axons from the adjacent tissue
  • (yellow) - multiple unmyelinated axons enclosed by a Schwann cell
    • Contain synaptic vesicles (orange), mitochondria (red), and smooth endoplasmic reticulum (cyan)
    • Cytoskeleton - microtubules (blue) and neurofilaments
  • (tan) - cytoplasm filled with contractile filaments and dense bodies
  • - small capillary of endothelial cells joined by
    • (red) - folded to allow passage through the capillary
    • - contractile cells that help control blood flow
    • (purple) - surrounds the capillary

Subcellular Structures:

  • Nucleus (blue) / Nuclear Envelope (purple)
  • Mitochondria (red)
  • Endoplasmic Reticulum (cyan)
