EM 080 Bowman's Capsule

Simple Squamous Epithelium

Renal corpuscles in the kidney consists of two structures:

  • Glomerulus - a tangled tuft of capillaries.
  • Bowman's capsule - a thin walled, sac-like structure that surrounds each glomerulus.

Fluid filtered from blood flowing through a glomerulus is collected within Bowman's capsule.

This micrograph shows Bowman's capsule as seen by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cut removed the glomerulus from this renal corpuscle.

  • Bowman's capsule (orange) - lined with a simple squamous epithelium
    • Borders of individual cells are not visible
    • Surface of cells bulge into the capsule over nuclei
    • Dark hole at the bottom is the beginning of the tubular component of the nephron
  • Tubules (yellow) - surround the renal corpuscle and have simple cuboidal epithelia
