EM 041 Small Intestine

Villi

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) to the tip of a single villus in the small intestine.

Intestinal absorptive cells (enterocytes) have a life span of only three to five days. They are continually renewed from stem cells found near the base of the intestinal crypts. The differentiated cells move upwards out of the crypts and towards the tip of villi. The older cells are then shed from the tips of villi into the lumen of the small intestine.
