UCSF 118 Skeletal Muscle

Skeletal Muscle
(Phosphotungstic Acid/Hematoxylin)

This specimen was stained with phosphotungstic acid/hematoxylin (PTAH) to show the muscle cross-striations.

Look for areas (,,and ) where striations can be identified. Identify the bands in this higher magnification image of several sarcomeres.

  • A Band: the main dark band
  • I Band: the main light band
  • H Band: thin light band in the middle of the A band
  • Z Line: thin dark line in the middle of the I band

These striations are seen with higher resolution in EM 222 Skeletal Muscle and EM 123 Skeletal Muscle by transmission electron microscopy.
