MH 091 Thick Skin

Dense Irregular Connective Tissue

contains collagen fibers arranged into irregular, interwoven bundles. (Some elastic fibers are also present.)

Dense irregular connective tissue is found prominently in the dermis of the skin and the lamina propria of the gastrointestinal tract.

The is the layer of skin between the epidermis (stratified squamous keratinized epithelium) and the subcutaneous tissue. The dermis provides tensile strength and elasticity to skin.

Fibroblasts are the most common cell type.

By scanning electron microscopy, the interwoven collagen fibers are easily seen. See EM 283 Dense Irregular Connective Tissue.
