What type of epithelium covers ? [ + ]

Stratified squamous keratinized epithelium – observe how the cells change in shape from cuboidal in the basal layers to squamous on the surface

Why is this epithelium keratinized? [ + ]

Because skin is exposed to air, it is keratinized to protect the surface from abrasion and is lubricated by glycolipids to protect it from dehydration

What type of epithelium lines the ? [ + ]

Stratified squamous non-keratinized epithelium

Why is this epithelium not keratinized? [ + ]

It is not exposed to the desiccating effects of air and is constantly kept moist
