Cell Structure

A simple columnar cell broke open to show the three-dimensional organization of its main components.

  • Plasma Membrane (dark green)
    • Apical surface is covered by microvilli
    • Lateral surfaces form invaginations with adjacent cells
    • Basal surface rests on the basal lamina
  • Nucleus (blue)
    • Nucleolus (light blue)
    • Nuclear Envelope (purple) - contains many nuclear pores
  • Golgi Apparatus (yellow)
  • Mitochondria (red)
  • Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (cyan) - bound ribosomes
  • Lysosomes (grayscale)
  • Centrioles (tan)
  • Cytoplasm (green)
