RD 263 Beta Cell

Golgi Apparatus

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of a beta cell in an islet of Langerhans within the pancreas.

Beta cells produce and secrete insulin, which helps regulate blood glucose levels. Insulin is synthesized by ribosomes on rough endoplasmic reticulum (cyan), transferred to the Golgi Apparatus (yellow), and packaged into secretory granules (purple).

  • (blue) / Nuclear Envelope (purple)
  • (yellow) - well developed in this secretory cell
  • (red)
  • Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (cyan) - scattered throughout the cytoplasm
  • (purple) - dense core surrounded by pale matrix
    • Core is composed of crystallized insulin
  • Cytoplasm (green)
