RD 235 Zona Reticularis

Zona Reticularis

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of cells in the zona reticularis of the adrenal cortex.

The zona reticularis is the innermost layer of the adrenal cortex. These cells primarily produce androgens (steroid sex hormones), which the gonads convert into more active forms.

  • (blue)/Nuclear Envelope (purple)/Nucleolus (yellow)
  • (red) - many elliptical or elongated mitochondria with tubular cristae
  • (yellow) - much fewer in number than in the other layers
  • (black) - surrounded by a membrane (unlike lipid droplets)
  • Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER) - small, anastomosing tubular elements and vesicles surrounding mitochondria and lipid droplets.
    • Fragments are so dense that it is not possible to identify them individually.
  • Cytoplasm (green)

By light microscopy, these cells are more heavily stained than the other layers of the adrenal cortex because they contain fewer lipid droplets and more lipofuscin.
