RD 025 Basal Infoldings

Distal Convoluted Tubule

Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the base of the epithelium of a distal convoluted tubule in the kidney.

Numerous mitochondria at the base of the cells are found in narrow compartments or interdigitating processes of neighboring cells. This brings mitochondria in close contact with a large area of the cell surface.

This arrangement provides a favorable juxtaposition of energy source to the convoluted cell surface involved in the active transport of ions.
