EM 376 Adrenal Medulla

Adrenal Medulla

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of chromaffin cells in the adrenal medulla.

The adrenal medulla is an extension of the autonomic nervous system and secrete catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine). They arise from neural crest cells as do post ganglionic neurons of sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia.

Chromaffin cells are similar in structure to other neuro-secretory cells rather than the steroid-producing cells of the adrenal cortex.

  • Golgi Apparatus (,; yellow)
  • (red) - elongated with flattened cristae
  • (cyan)
  • (purple) - small, dense core granules
  • Cytoplasm (green)

Preganglionicsympathetic nerve fibers form synapses (, ,) with chromaffin cells.
