EM 305 Mitochondria

Mitochondria

A distinctive feature of the adrenal cortex Is the tubular or vesicular cristae found in their mitochondria.

Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a single mitochondrion from the adrenal cortex. Unlike the lamellar cristae of many cells, the tubular or vesicular cristae commonly found in steroid producing cells are seen.

mitochondria
  • Mitochondrion (red) - round or elliptical with tubular or vesicular cristae
    • Outer Mitochondrial Membrane (black)
    • Inner Mitochondrial Membrane (red)
  • Lipid Droplets (purple) - several large droplets are near the mitochondrion
  • >Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum (SER; cyan) - small, dilated vesicles surround the mitochondrion
    • Abundant in steriod producing cells
  • Cytoplasm (green)

This mitochondrion is undergoing fission with only the outer mitochondrial membrane holding it together. A ring will contract around the middle completing the division into two mitochondria.
