EM 282 Mammotroph

Mammotroph

Mammotrophs (lactotrophs) are endocrine cells in the anterior pituitary that produce prolactin (PRL). PRL is involved in the maturation of mammary glands and stimulates lactation by the mammary gland.

Lactotrophs during lactation are characterized by large, round to oval secretory granules.

  • (blue) / Nuclear Envelope (purple)
  • (yellow) - well-developed when actively secreting
  • (red)
  • (cyan) - abundant throughout the cytoplasm
  • (black)
  • Cytoplasm (green)

Lactotrophs are ~20% of the anterior pituitary cells.
