EM 265 Oocyte

Graafian Follicle

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a mature Graafian follicle in the ovary. Growth of secondary follicless progress to the eventual formation of the mature Graafian follicle. The oocyte enlarges, granule cells continue to proliferate, and the antrum grows.

  • Oocyte (missing) - large cell that undergoes meiotic division to form an ovum
  • (yellow) - layer of glycoproteins that surrounds the oocyte (partially separated and folded from the corona radiata)
  • (cyan() - cumulus cells that project into the antrum and support the oocyte
    • (purple) - innermost layer of cumulus cells that surround the oocyte
  • (tan) - single chamber filled with follicular fluid
  • (blue) - several layers surround the follicular antrum
  • Basal lamina (purple) - separates the outer layer of granulosa cells from the theca interna
  • (green) - layer of connective tissue that surrounds the developing follicle
  • (gray) - outermost layer of connective tissue that is continuous with the surrounding connective tissue
