EM 262 Thyroid

Thyroid

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of a vascular cast of blood vessels in the thyroid. The blood vessels are perfused with resin, allowed to harden, and the surrounding tissue is then dissolved.

The three dimensional structure of blood vessels around several follicles is seen. Each follicle is surrounded by a dense network of capillaries. This rich vascularization allows follicular cells to be in direct contact with capillaries.
