EM 234 Kidney Glomerulus

Kidney Glomerulus

Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a fractured glomerulus from a renal corpuscle. This glomerulus has been cut open to reveal the inner and outer surfaces of several capillaries.

  • (red) - profiles of several capillaries can be seen in both longitudinal and cross-sections
    • (~50 to 100 nm in diameter) - endothelial cells contain numerous pores (or fenestrations)
      • No diaphragms span the pores
    • Allows blood plasma access to the basement membrane
  • (orange and yellow) - extend processes that wrap around the outer surface of the capillaries
    • Filtration Slits - foot Processes (pedicels) of adjacent podocytes interdigitate leaving gaps between them
    • Slit Diaphragms - span the filtration slits

The basement membrane can not be identified.
