EM 188 Parafollicular Cell

Parafollicular Cell

Transmission electron micrograph of a parafollicular cell (C cell) in the thyroid. Parafollicular cells secrete calcitonin which lowers blood levels of calcium by inhibiting the resorption of bone by osteoclasts.

  • (green) – found in small number and are usually located basally in the epithelium and in spaces between the spherical follicles
    • (yellow) – well-developed in these secretory cells
    • (purple)
  • (green) – simple cuboidal epithelium that form the sphercial follicles
    • (RER, cyan) – large amounts for the production of thyroglobulin
    • (black) – release thyroid hormones from endocytosed colloid (yellow)

Subcellular Structures

  • Nuceli (blue) / Nuclear Envelope (purple)
  • Golgi Apparatus (yellow)
  • Mitochondria (red)
  • Endoplasmic Reticulum (cyan)
  • Lysosomes (black)
