Endocardium

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of the endocarium.

The endocardium lines the chambers and values of the heart. It can be seen in cross-section at the surface of atrium visible at the top of the image.

The is composed of three layers:

  • (red) - innermost layer composed of a simple squamous epithelium
    • Basal Lamina (purple) - separates the epithelium from the underlying connective tissue
  • - thin layer of loose fibrous connective tissue (orange) containing collagen and elastic fibers (tan)
  • Subendocardial Layer - contains connective tissue, nerves, blood vessels, and Purkinje fibers

(red) are seen within the atrium.

The endocardium covers the myocardium of cardiac muscle cells (green).

  • Nucleus (blue) / Nuclear Envelope (purple)
  • Golgi Apparatus (yellow)
  • Mitochondria (red)
  • Endoplasmic Reticulum (cyan)
  • Cytoplasm (green)
