Cardiac Muscle

Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a cross-section of cardiac muscle from the interior surface of the atrium.

  • (blue) / Nuclear Envelope (purple) - in the center of the cell and is mostly euchromatin
  • (dark green) - cross sections of sarcomeres fill the cytoplasm
  • Golgi Apparatus (yellow; ,) - only visible in some cells
  • (red) - numerous, large, and densely packed between myofibrils
  • (cyan) - dispersed around the myofibrils
  • (black) - round, black granules
  • Atrial Secretion Granules - usually near the Golgi apparatus (300 to 400 nm diameter). Difficult to identify.
  • Cytoplasm (green)

The surface of the atrium is visible at the top of the image.

  • (red) - many are visible within the atrium
  • (red) - simple squamous epithelium with a thin layer of connective tissue
    • Basal Lamina (purple) - separates the epithelium from the underlying connective tissue
    • (orange) - produce the collagen and elastic fibers
    • (tan) - longitudinal and cross-sections

- cross-section of a capillary is seen within the muscle

  • Endothelium (red) - nucleus of an endothelial cell
  • Red blood cell (red) - inside of the capillary
