EM 115 Mitosis

Mitosis

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of a cell in late prophase (prometaphase).

Prophase is the first step of mitosis. Chromatin condenses into chromosomes while the nuclear envelope breaks down.

  • (dark green)
  • (purple) - this thin section only passes through some of the chromosomes.
  • (red)
  • (cyan)
  • Cytoplasm (green)

This cell is found in the connective tissue underneath the intestinal epithelium of the small intestine. Parts of other cell types are also seen.

  • Intestinal Epithelium (dark green) - base of several cells
  • Plasma Cells (orange) - secrete large amounts of antibodies
  • Fibroblasts (tan)
  • Smooth Muscle Cells (blue)
  • Endothelial Cells (red) - edge of a capillary
