EM 107 Adipose Tissue

Adipose Tissue

Adipose tissue is a loose connective tissue that contains mostly adipocytes (or fat cells). Its main role is to store energy in the form of lipids (actually, triglycerides).

This cluster of adipocytes resembles a bunch of grapes as seen by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The cells are supported by a delicate network of reticular fibers composed of type 3 collagen.

  • (yellow) - round cells that can grow up to 100 µn in diameter.
  • (orange) - thin, woven strands of type 3 collagen.
