Macrophage

Macrophages are phagocytic cells that are common in connective tissue.

Macrophages contain many lysosomes, phagosomes (vesicle formed around ingested material), and residual bodies (vesicle containing indigestible material) in the cytoplasm.

  • (dark green) - many projections (pseudopodia) of various size and shape.
  • (blue) / Nuclear Envelope (purple) - large amount of euchromatin.
  • Golgi Apparatus (yellow) - not visible.
  • (red) - contain many cristae.
  • (cyan)
  • Lysosomes - many in various stages of development.
    • (dark gray) - smaller, dark vesicles containing lysosomal enzymes.
    • (gray) - larger vesicles formed by the fusion of primary lysosomes with phagocytotic vesicles.
    • (tertiary lysosomes; black) - large vesicles containing undigested material of irregular shapes.
